She Gave Me A Book

Thelma wiped the cloth one more time over the table and was satisfied that the kitchen had been put back to rights after breakfast.  She sighed when she looked up to the clock.  Some days she felt like she no sooner got done with cleaning up from breakfast than it was time to start in on lunch. 

She'd gotten off to a slower than normal start today and that had really put her behind.  Today was Tom's first day of school and between making sure he had everything he needed and that he got on the bus on time and trying to console Sam who didn't want his brother to go had taken up most of her morning. 

John had done his best to comfort Sam and distract him while she'd waited at the end of the road with Tom for the bus and seen him on it safely but she could have sworn she could still hear Sam crying out for his brother just the same.  By the time she got back into the house Sam's cries had given way to hiccupping whimpers.
