Bakula Attached to "No Strings"
Scott Bakula will lead the cast of an upcoming
production at UCLA's Ralph Freud Playhouse called "No Strings," running May
8-20. It is a West-coast revival of a musical that debuted on Broadway in 1962,
produced by L.A.'s "Reprise! Broadway's Best" theatre company. Bakula will play
David Jordan, a writer in Paris who falls in love with a successful high-fashion
model.
"While this Pulitzer prize-winner has been trying to recover from a prolonged
case of writer's block, he's assumed the dubious role of 'charming
intellectual-in-residence' at some of the Continent's more luxurious watering
holes," reads a synopsis of the play. "As the model's work takes them on a
whirlwind tour of the most exclusive European playgrounds, their romance
develops into the first deeply-felt, honest relationship either has ever known.
The model, however, ruefully comes to realize that the lifestyle demanded by her
career is stifling the writer, and if he's ever to fulfill the promise of his
earlier work, he must take responsibility for himself, go home, and write.
Reluctantly, but with no strings, they part, each having discovered anew their
capacity to love."
The score by Richard Rodgers (of Rodgers & Hammerstein fame) features such tunes
as "The Sweetest Sounds," "Love Makes the World Go" and the jazz-infused "Eager
Beaver."
During the two-week run, performances will take place every evening except
Mondays, with two shows on Saturdays and Sundays. No other cast has been
announced besides Bakula.

Before his L.A. gig, Bakula and his wife Chelsea Field will serve as Honorary
Co-Chairs of a benefit for a theatrical group for stuttering children being held
April 23 in New York. The gala, titled "Express Yourself," will honor Mod Squad
actress and Bakula family friend, Peggy Lipton, who has written a bestselling
book about her struggles with stuttering. The star-studded evening will start at
the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at NYU, followed by an elegant
dinner at the Chinatown Brasserie. Individual tickets start at $300. Proceeds
from ticket sales and a silent auction — which will include a Darth Vader helmet
signed by James Earl Jones and VIP passes to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart —
will go to the Our Time Theatre Company of New York. For more information call
